Cognos 11.1.5 (& newer) allows developers to incorporate custom schematics via scaled vector graphics, which are based on xml. This means that you can modify the xml of the graphic to create reference objects that you can use in order to align your data with parts of the graphic. Being able to create or adapt an existing chart created with any JavaScript library means we're no longer tied to what IBM provides. If you see a chart in another tool that you like, then I'm sure there's a way to create it in Cognos.
