Anthropic Releases Claude 3.5 Sonnet
Anthropic launched their latest addition to the Claude family – Claude 3.5 Sonnet – in late June 2024. This model builds on the capabilities of Claude 3, which was released earlier this year. The new model is now accessible to Claude users via both the web and iOS app, with developers also having access.
Overview
Sonnet is the middle, general use model from Anthropic. With Haiku being the smaller, faster model and Opus being its highest-end model. Early benchmarks released from Anthropic show that 3.5 Sonnet is twice as fast as the previous version and even outperforms 3 Opus. This is an impressive performance increase in such a short amount of time. Benchmarks also show 3.5 Sonnet outperforming GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro and Llama 3 400B.
These enhancements mean Claude will have greatly improved results when writing, generating transcriptions, conducting code translation and managing multi-step workflows.
New Features
An interesting new feature included with this release is called Artifacts. This feature is simple, but powerful. Artifacts allows users to view standalone content generated from Claude in real-time. This makes it easier to share and build upon the content. For example, if Claude is prompted it generates a code snippet, the explanation for the code is generated as the response on the left, but the right side of the screen contains the actual code snippet. This creates an interactive workspace for users to build, edit, and iterate on their work directly within Claude.
This workflow focused feature looks to be a hint at the future of Claude. Anthropic’s focus on enterprise style features and Artifacts fits very well within that strategy.

And Anthropic isn’t done with releases for version 3.5 - the company promises to release the 3.5 Haiku and 3.5 Opus models later this year.
