Harness analytics to avoid athlete injury.

The University of Louisville is a state-supported research university with three campuses, nearly 7,000 faculty and staff, and a student body of over 22,000. Its student athletes, the Louisville Cardinals, comprise 13 women’s and 10 men’s teams across various popular sports, and all 23 teams participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

College athletics produce many of the professional athletes and sports stars of tomorrow.  However, sport-related injuries can drastically affect performance in key games, and prematurely end a promising career. Working together with IBM and PMsquare, the University of Louisville built a solution that automatically captures and models data from wearables and other sources, and visualizes it in intuitive dashboards for coaches and athletes.

Results

The University of Louisville sport performance department was able to harness analytics to predict injuries with a 92% accuracy rate, achieve optimal player availability and save valuable time.

  • 95% player availability achieved for basketball practices and games.

  • 92% accuracy achieved in predicting injuries, with zero false negatives.

  • 20% time saving for the sports performance team by automating data collection processes.

Feedback
